Android 13 will alert users when background apps drain the battery

Battery life is one of the most important items on all smartphones. On new Android mobile phones, the battery life depends on both its capacity and the Android operating system itself, which allows a large number of applications to run in the background, which greatly reduces the active time of using the mobile device.

Now, Google is working to solve this problem by developing a new notification system that will inform the user about background applications that consume a large amount of battery. This is evidenced by the documentation that came with the Android 13 developer preview version.

According to 9to5Google, the Android 13 version of the operating system will display a notification whenever one of the applications consumes large amounts of battery within 24 hours. Google also states that this notification will not be displayed during the active use of a particular application, but only when the user finishes active use and if high consumption continues in the background for the next 24 hours.

After the initial display of the message, and if the user decides to delete the notification, it will reappear only after 24 hours. In addition, Android 13 will take into account criteria such as whether the application runs in the background or not, how many cache applications it is, and what tasks it performs when measuring the impact of certain applications on battery consumption.

However, Android 13 will not introduce the same precautionary measures for all applications. Some of the exceptions are:

  • System applications
  • Applications designed for additional devices, such as smartwatches or fit bracelets
  • Applications that are constantly used
  • VPN applications
  • Applications that have a ROLE_DIALER role

In addition to battery consumption, Android 13 will keep track of how long a particular app runs in the background. If the application runs for more than 20 hours within 24 hours, the operating system will send a notification informing the user that a particular application has been running for a long time.

All this sounds good, but it remains to be seen how it will work in practice and whether it will really contribute to extending the duration of one phone charge.
