Apple held its Peek Performance event and introduced several novelties to the public, including the new iPhone SE, the new iPad Air with a chipset based on the M1 line of processors, but also a brand new computer for professionals and creatives – Apple Mac Studio and compared its performance with, no less, than with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 standalone graphics card.
What exactly is it about?
First, we are introduced to the latest and most powerful processor that this company produces – the M1 Ultra chip, which is practically two M1 Max chips connected using Apple’s new technology called UltraFusion. This technology enables the connection of two compatible chips with a high-performance bus, which in theory, and it seems in practice, especially in optimized applications, allows twice the performance.
At its event, Apple unveiled several charts showing how powerful this new chipset actually is, and one of those charts showed how the M1 Ultra delivers better performance in video games with 200W less power than, as they said in the chart, ” the most powerful graphics cards available on the market ”. Currently, there is no faster graphics solution than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090.
However, things are not quite as Apple presented them. According to The Verge, which tested the Apple M1 Ultra and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 in parallel, these two solutions are not even close in the most demanding modern video games, but also in classic tests, writes the Expreview.

Geekbench 5 Compute results show that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 is more than twice as fast as the M1 Ultra, while a similar situation is repeated in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a video game that has traditionally been used as a benchmark for graphics performance testing.
So no, the M1 Ultra doesn’t deliver better performance than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 in video games. But it must be noted that this chip still provides great performance because Shadow of the Tomb Raider is more than playable and in 4K resolution with a stable 60 frames per second. These results for an integrated graphics solution are amazing, with significantly less electricity use.
So, the conclusion is clear – Apple did lead users to the wrong conclusions during its presentation of the new processor, which we certainly do not support. But it must also be said that the new chip provides great graphics performance, just not as much as the powerful GeForce RTX 3090 can.
