Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 change their names due to the situation in Ukraine?

Samsung has finally "reacted" to the current situation in Ukraine and confirmed that it will stop selling smartphones in Russia. Now Samsung has decided to remove the letter “Z” from the name of its flexible phones, i.e. Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Samsung’s Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian websites now all list Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 as Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3. Differences between the URL and product page confirm that the change is quite recent. It is interesting that Samsung’s Ukrainian website still has an unchanged Z mark, which is strange because it was supposed to be the first place from which it would be logical to delete Z from the name.

Samsung seems to have made these changes at a low level, given that there is no official announcement from the company about the sudden change of the product name, as well as its leading products. As for the reason why Samsung decided to implement the change at the last minute, the answer is obvious.

Over the past month, the “Z” symbol has become synonymous with the Russian military, something the countries of the former Soviet bloc are not too keen on. The anti-Russian feeling in these regions is quite high due to their proximity to the country. It remains to be seen whether Samsung has decided to rename its flexible devices globally in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, or whether everything will remain only at the national level.

Although removing the letter “Z” from the name of the device is not a radical change and will definitely not have a big impact, the ban on the sale of phones could have some impact because Samsung is one of the most popular brands in Russia.

Z LETTER EXPLANATION

Since the beginning of the military operation, which was announced by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, on February 24, the letter “Z” can be seen on the military vehicles of the Russian army.

Some believe that the operation was called “Operation Z”, based on the conspicuous letter Z, which marked Russian tanks and other military vehicles.

They believe that this is the official name that Putin chose for his operation.

As the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation explained on March 3, they chose the Latin letters Z and V on their vehicles as symbols of special expressions.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the letter Z means “For victory”, and the letter V – “Strength in truth” and “The task will be fulfilled”.
