Most Americans think AI is a threat: Apple’s chance to stand out

A new survey shows a lot of Americans aren’t too thrilled about AI. In fact, many think it’s more harmful than helpful. That hesitation might actually work in Apple’s favor.

People Still Don’t Trust AI

The Pew Research Center asked over 5,000 U.S. adults what they think about artificial intelligence. Then they checked in with 1,000 AI experts. The difference between the two groups was clear: experts were mostly optimistic, regular folks… not so much.

Here’s what the public had to say:

– 43% think AI is more likely to hurt them than help.
– Only 24% think it’ll benefit them.
– 33% aren’t sure either way.

Looking further ahead — say, over the next 20 years — people are even more skeptical:

– 35% think AI will do more harm than good to the country.
– Just 17% think it’ll have a mostly positive impact.
– The rest either think it’ll be a mixed bag or don’t really know.

In short, most people aren’t feeling great about where AI is heading. And that hesitation? It could be Apple’s opening.

Why This Is Apple’s Moment

Apple has always leaned into privacy, simplicity, and trust. While OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are racing to launch the next big AI product, Apple’s slow-and-steady approach could end up being the smarter play.

Let’s be real — a lot of the anxiety around AI comes down to a few things: job loss, privacy risks, and general unease with how fast it’s moving. Apple probably can’t stop automation from shaking up the job market, but it *can* help people feel more in control of the tech they’re using.

If Apple stays true to what it does best — designing things that just work, without demanding tons of personal data — it could win over the crowd that’s unsure or uneasy about AI.

That doesn’t mean it’ll be easy. Competing with the tech giants who are already deep into AI is a challenge. But there’s clearly a gap in the market for AI that’s transparent, helpful, and doesn’t feel like it’s trying to take over your life.

What do you make of all this? Do you share the same concerns about AI? Think Apple’s got a shot at doing things differently? Let us know in the comments
