In the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, he reports that Apple is on schedule to release two new versions of the AirPods 4 as early as next month. These models will include both an entry-level option and a mid-tier version, set to replace the existing AirPods 2 and AirPods 3.

Current AirPods Lineup

Apple has been offering the AirPods 2 since early 2019 as its budget-friendly option. Despite their outdated design and lack of modern features, they remain popular, often selling for under $90. These basic wireless headphones continue to serve as a straightforward, affordable choice for iPhone users.

On the other hand, AirPods 3 have been available since October 2021, bringing significant upgrades like Spatial Audio, a force sensor on the stems, Apple Watch charging capability, and improved sound quality. Despite these enhancements, Apple kept the AirPods 2 in the lineup at a lower price point, starting at $129, while AirPods 3 launched at $179.

What’s Next for AirPods

Gurman suggests that the AirPods 4 will replace both the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3, with two models: an entry-level version and a mid-tier version. While both models are expected to have similar designs, the key difference will be the inclusion of active noise cancellation in the mid-tier version. The entry-level model will lack this feature.

He also clarifies that the mid-tier AirPods 4 should not be confused with the upcoming AirPods Pro 3, which aren’t expected to be updated until later. Both AirPods 4 models are likely to include USB-C, with the mid-tier version also supporting wireless charging, unlike the entry-level model.

It remains to be seen how Apple will brand these new AirPods. The names could be something like “AirPods Lite” for the entry-level version and simply “AirPods 4” for the mid-tier model. In any case, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
