Google hints at upcoming NotebookLM app

Since its introduction, NotebookLM has been accessible exclusively via its website. However, Google recently indicated that a dedicated app is on the horizon.

The current design of NotebookLM, especially after the three-pane update introduced late last year, is optimized for web use, catering to users who engage with its full range of features. Nonetheless, the interface is adaptable and functions adequately on mobile devices, utilizing top tabs for navigation.

Users also have the option to add NotebookLM to their home screens as a Progressive Web App (PWA), providing an app-like experience by hiding browser elements such as the address bar.

Adding NotebookLM as a PWA:

  • Android: Open Chrome, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select “Add to Home screen.”
  • iOS: Open Safari, tap the share icon, and choose “Add to Home Screen.”

It’s worth noting that the current PWA has some limitations. For instance, accessing settings from the homepage can be problematic due to overlapping icons, and the status bar may not adjust appropriately when switching themes.

In a recent social media post, the NotebookLM team announced, “The NotebookLM app is coming soon!” This likely refers to the development of native mobile applications for both Android and iOS platforms.

While Google typically refrains from creating desktop applications for Mac, Windows, or Linux, the introduction of mobile apps would enhance visibility in app stores and potentially offer a more seamless user experience. It remains to be seen whether these apps will be fully native or function as wrappers for the existing web interface, allowing for streamlined updates and maintenance.
