Starting October 25, 2025, Google will stop updating the 1st and 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostats. These models, first launched in 2011 and 2012, will no longer get software updates because of aging hardware.
The affected models are:
- Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011)
- Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012)
- Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen Europe version, 2014)
After October, users will still be able to manually adjust the thermostat on the device itself — changing temperature, mode, and schedules. But remote control through the Nest or Home apps and Google Assistant will stop working. Features like Home/Away Assist will also shut down. Existing schedules set through the app will keep running but can only be changed directly on the thermostat.
Google is offering discounts for those impacted:
- In the U.S., $130 off a 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat (regular price $279.99)
- In Canada, $160 off (regular price $379.99)
- In Europe, 50% off the Tado Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit, which supports Google Home
Emails with upgrade details are expected soon.
There are no changes planned for newer Nest thermostat models, and Google says schedule editing through the Google Home app will be improved later this year. However, Google also confirmed it won’t launch any new Nest thermostats in Europe going forward.
