Following the release of Gemini Live earlier this week, Google is now rolling out a new floating overlay panel for Gemini on Android devices. The glowing effect around the panel is the key indicator that you have this new feature.
When you activate Gemini, you’ll notice a glow animation around the panel. This not only looks nice but also signals that you have Gemini’s updated contextual overlay. First announced at I/O 2024, this new feature allows Gemini’s responses to appear in a panel that can expand, rather than taking up the entire screen. This helps keep your current activity in view and minimizes interruptions. Plus, you can drag images generated by Gemini into apps like Gmail or Google Messages.
If you need a full-screen view, you can tap the top-right corner of the panel to open it up.
Along with this rollout, there’s a new “Ask about this video” option when using Gemini on a YouTube video, replacing the previous “Ask about this screen” feature. This allows Gemini to summarize the video or respond to follow-up questions.
The floating overlay with the new glow effect isn’t widely available yet. It’s currently limited to a few devices, including some Pixel 8 Pros. Google has mentioned that this feature will be more broadly available in the coming weeks for both regular Gemini users and Gemini Advanced subscribers.
