Google’s Gemini app is currently experiencing a significant issue affecting its Audio Overview functionality. Users attempting to generate audio summaries from uploaded documents are met with an error message stating, “I cannot generate an audio overview because I do not have the capability to create audio files.” This problem persists despite the app indicating that the audio overview is being generated and sending a notification that it’s ready.
The bug appears to impact both Android and web versions of the app, specifically when using the 2.0 Flash and 2.5 Pro (experimental) models. While the audio feature is compromised, other functionalities like text summarization and the “Talk Live about this” option remain operational.
Interestingly, this issue coincides with the brief appearance and subsequent disappearance of the “2.0 Experimental Advanced” model within the app earlier today, suggesting potential backend updates or testing phases that may have inadvertently affected the Audio Overview feature.
In contrast, Google’s NotebookLM continues to generate podcasts without issues, indicating that the problem is isolated to the Gemini app. As users await a fix, there’s a growing call for Google to introduce a native audio player within the Gemini app to enhance user experience and eliminate the need for downloading audio files separately.
Users are advised to stay tuned for updates as Google works to resolve the issue and restore full functionality to the Gemini app’s Audio Overview feature.
