The new generation of AMD Ryzen 6000 models brings a lot of improvements that will affect the quality and performance of your work, whether it is everyday computer use, gaming, or business use. AMD finds the reason for improving performance in the fact that more and more users of modern computers prefer luxury and high-performance systems. On the other hand, the market and customers are looking for thinner, lighter devices with greater work autonomy. There is a noticeable trend in recent years, which indicates the fact that the gaming class of laptops has experienced a real boom.
These are all reasons that AMD was guided by when designing the Ryzen 6000 series of APU mobile processors. What you should definitely keep in mind, is that the basic lever of power of AMD solutions lies in the advantages in the field of application of advanced processor architecture and modern technology, which together result in features that are crucial for a mobile computer. It is required that one of them be light, quiet in operation, cool, thin profile, and convenient to carry – in a word, a flexible computer that is both good for work and plays and not nailed to the desk of users.
All of this resulted in today’s Ryzen 6000 series of mobile processors. The biggest innovations are certainly the improved Zen 3+ processor core, integrated graphics core of advanced RDNA 2 architecture present in the current generation of AMD Radeon graphics cards, 6nm production process – in a word, thoroughly revised and designed, brand new mobile platform for the new generation of laptops.
AMD likes to present the release of a new generation of mobile processors as an optimization done at five levels of consumption. The essence of these efforts is inefficient consumption, the principle around which practically everything happens on the market of mobile computers. The first was done in the field of production technology and the transition to a 6-nm transistor manufacturing process, thus achieving more efficient and low-power operation. The second level is in the field of improving the microarchitecture with the arrival of new, faster, and more energy-efficient processor cores Zen 3+ generation.
The third is the improvement of SoC solutions through precise division and partitioning of processor resources in order to optimize consumption in detail. The fourth is a completely new consumption management structure that relies on management software and advanced machine learning algorithms. Finally, the fifth refers to the entire platform through individual optimization of each component, to which are added the advantages of applying advanced AMD technologies. In the end, the “Plus” in the Zen 3+ model is actually about improving energy efficiency!
First of all, according to different classes of consumption and, of course, performance. The first is intended for thin and light notebooks: Ryzen 5 and 7 in the form of 6600U and 6800U models. These are processors with 6 and 8 cores, capable of performing twice as many “threads” and with a consumption of 15W to a maximum of 28W. The next group is intended for thin computers for the needs of enthusiasts and with a maximum consumption of 35W. It is a range of Ryzen 5, 7, and 9 models marked 6600HS, 6800HS, 6900HS, and 6980HS.
The weakest has 6 and the strongest 8 Zen 3+ cores. Finally, the best-performing group for ultra-demanding enthusiasts is the Ryzen 5, 7, and 9, which have the suffixes “H” and “HX” in the model designation, such as the 6600H, 6800H, or 6900XH and the “flagship” 6950HX model, which should associate you with extremely good performance. They all have a target consumption of 45W.
The comparison of the new Ryzen 6000 models with the competition of the current Intel Core i9 12000 series is particularly impressive. So, for example, in a direct comparison of the Core i9 12900HK, which pulls 110W in continuous consumption and load in the Cinebench test and on the other hand Ryzen 9 6900HS with its 35W, we have a situation where AMD Ryzen provides greater battery life while creating conditions for computer thinner profile because it does not need large refrigerators to dissipate large amounts of heat energy. In this case, the Ryzen 9 6900HS delivers 262% better performance for every Watt of energy consumed, ie 2.62 times better than direct competition.
The AMD Ryzen 6000 series is divided into three major groups
Comparing directly the representatives of the Ryzen 6000 series and the corresponding models from the 12th generation Intel Core series in the class of ultra-economical models, the new AMD models have more operating cores, so the 28W “Ultrathin” Ryzen 6000 series offers 8 Zen 3+ cores while Intel Core models in this class have 6 cores. In the ultra-economy model class, the difference is even more dramatic as the 15W AMD Ryzen 6000 offers 8, and the Intel Core has only two high-performance cores. In practice, this means 117% better CPU performance is enabled to achieve 40% higher clock speed, 181% faster work in graphically demanding jobs, and has up to 3 hours of better working autonomy while using the battery on the computer. All this allows AMD Ryzen 6000 models with a consumption of 15W to be better even than the existing Intel Core i7-1185G models from a higher category with a consumption of 28W of electricity.
The difference in performance is even more pronounced with AMD Ryzen 6000 models and consumption of 28W – 130% better CPU and 200% better GPU performance. Remember that this is still the “Ultrathin” class, ie ultra-thin notebook computers.
This progress and development have enabled a serious improvement in gaming performance in a wide range of available notebook models, which has not been possible so far due to technical requirements regarding consumption and heating. For the first time ever, an integrated graphics card under the auspices of the processor allows completely smooth gaming and fluid gameplay in Full HD 1080p resolution thanks to the Radeon 600M generation of graphics accelerators.
On the other hand, there is an even more impressive pleasure with the use of separate graphics processors that provide a feeling and performance comparable to classic PC desktop gaming systems in the form of thin and easily portable notebooks.
Translated into an everyday situation from now on, with one integrated Radeon 680M graphics solution, you can play virtually any game at 1080p resolution. Some AAA titles may require lowering the graphic details to “Low” values, but the point is that integrated solutions are no longer a barrier to playing the latest games without any restrictions in terms of relevance and choice of titles.
The credit for that certainly lies in the new generation of Radeon 600M integrated graphics solutions that use the most modern RDNA 2 architecture. iGPU solutions in this class have from 6 to 12 computing units with an operating frequency of 1.9-2.4 GHz. With 50% more executable units, half the memory transfer, 2x more memory for caching data, and using Fidelity FSR optimization, one Radeon 680M easily copes with the GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q solution, which is a significantly higher consumer and requires larger laptop case. The boundary between integrated and discrete GPU solutions has been practically erased.
When we talk about the capabilities of a separate mobile graphics processor, the new Radeon 6800S certainly stands out. Assisted by the fastest mobile GPU ever seen with 5GHz, Zen 3+ architecture, and support for PCIe 4.0 bus, it provides a level of gaming performance like classic desktop systems, and if you compare it with Nvidia mobile solutions, the mentioned Radeon 6800S is 10-16 % faster than the GeForce RTX3080, the current high-performance standard in the laptop class.
In addition to all the details mentioned regarding performance progress, the AMD Ryzen 6000 series brings significant improvements in terms of the capabilities of the entire mobile platform. First of all, we mean support for the USB 4 standard of communication with peripherals and 4x faster (40 Gbps) data transfer compared to the current, fastest USB 3.2 Gen2 specifications. Let us also mention the basic support of the PCIe Gen4 standard of communication with the primary graphics adapter, but also fast NVMe SSD devices for data storage.
There is also unavoidable progress in terms of system memory speed with support for LPDDR5 and DDR5 standard RAM. Higher transfer and faster memory affect processors with an integrated graphics solution, which brings a new dimension of performance, but also in the work of CPU cores.
The entire platform also received support for the enhanced Wi-Fi 6E standard of wireless network communication, as well as the latest specification of the Bluetooth 5.2 standard.
Along with the listed innovations, there is also support for: Microsoft Pluto Windows 11 security option, HDR support for the new generation of OLED and mini LED screens, HDMI 2.1 connection to external large diagonal screens, Display Port 2 specification, and finally AV1 hardware decompression. In a word, a completely rounded platform that until yesterday was only available on classic PC desktop systems.
Finally, let’s recap what the new generation of laptops based on the AMD Ryzen 6000 series of mobile APU processors brings us. First of all, it is historically the biggest breakthrough achieved in gaming performance so far. You practically get twice the fps compared to the previous generation of similar solutions. Building on the previous one, one cannot ignore the performance breakthrough in the class of the thinnest and ultra-portable mobile computers with an average of 36% improvement, especially in the part of graphically demanding jobs.
